Expectant dads: want to be supportive, educated and ready to help when it’s go-time? There are apps for that.
Pregnancy can be a beautiful, magical time for both expectant mothers and fathers. It can also be very weird, scary, and downright confusing.
Thankfully with today’s technology, dads-to-be can have the best information at their fingertips when something goes awry, when the going gets tough, or just when they want to know what’s going on with their expecting wife and how they can be supportive.
Most apps on the market are geared for mothers-to-be, which is wonderful – but the frilly, flowery images and lady talk that happens may not exactly appeal to men. Dads, we totally get it, and we’re here to give you a rundown of our favorite apps that will appeal to you.
Research led by Amina Alio at the University of South Florida suggests that a father’s involvement during pregnancy plays an important role in preventing the death of an infant during its first year, so using these apps can literally help save your unborn baby’s life.
With these apps, you can feel confident that you’ll have the information you need to help your pregnant partner along as you journey together toward parenthood and beyond.
Who’s Your Daddy?
If you take a humorous twist on life, this app is for you. Who’s Your Daddy? is “written for men by men (with advice from midwives)” and it’s clear that this app is geared for dads.
With daily and weekly tips to help you along on your journey, you’ll feel like your best buds are giving you all the best tips. This app has a great timeline filled with key dates that you need to know, and the tools included help you with to-do lists, a baby name list, a hospital bag checklist, and a contraction counter.
This lumberjack themed app is the ultimate men’s field guide to pregnancy. It offers weekly advice, “rugged” baby size comparisons, a customized checklist, a contraction counter, and a shareable announcement for when the baby is born.
Men who have used this app rate it highly for not being “pink and girly” and one even said that he recommends the app to all the dads in his pregnancy class.
If you’re looking for a no-frills contraction timer, this is it. Contractions also has some quick guides for understanding contractions and recognizing the signs of Braxton Hicks so that you’re not left totally in the dark.
Now you won’t have to buy an expensive video baby monitor. Dormi is a powerful app that connects your phone to another device to let you know that your baby is safe and happy at all times.
If you’re paired up with another phone and are in the middle of a call, Dormi will gently let you know if your baby is upset, without a rude interruption. This is a must-have for all parents-to-be.
White Noise Generator
When the baby arrives, you’re going to want to have a white noise app on your phone. A 1990 study from the Archives of Disease in Childhood found that 80% of the babies studied fell asleep within 5 minutes of listening to white noise, as compared to only 25% who were not. White Noise Generator currently has 16 different sounds to choose from and sound mixing is available.
